‘A Journey through Uukwaluudhi History’ 2009-06-17
Launched in Tsandi in the Omusati region last Wednesday, was the first book recording stories and the history and traditions of the Aakwaluudhi people. In attendance were Her Majesty, Queen Liisa Taaipopi, teachers and leaners from five schools in the area and the Principals from Onambala Junior Secondary School, Ekango Primary School, Tsandi Junior Secondary School, Ondukuta Combined School, Shikongo Ipinge Secondary School, representatives from the Conservancy, The Uukwaluudhi Monuments Council, the Traditional Authority and Annie Symonds, the researcher and author. Proudly donating the books was Mrs Karine Shikongo the Chairwoman of the Uukwaluudhi Conservancy. The Oshiwambo copies are to be used schools and the Teachers Resource Centre as an educational resource, stimulating an interest in the cultural heritage of the Tsandi area, in addition to fostering an awareness of their surrounding environment and promote the protection of its resources. The book records many stories only ever spoken before and combines research from a number of different sources to culminate in a colourful, eye catching portrayal of life in this part of the north-central region. The books are part of an initiative to provide alternative sources of income to the Tsandi community. The English and German versions sold at the Uukwaluudhi Royal Homestead in Tsandi, bookshops and curio shops in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Tsumeb, as well as a number of lodges, will help to reduce rural poverty. The concept was developed by the Namibian Community Based Tourism Assistance Trust with funding from the Global Environment Fund at the request of the community who found that information on the area region was in great demand and of interest to tourists.

Sesfontein Figtree Campsite – close to the action in town

Situated close to Sesfontein Conservancy office, and already proving very popular with visitors to the area, Figtree Campsite offers a shady haven under beautiful giant fig trees.  Four camping sites are available, each easily accommodating up to 4 tents, and each with its own private flush toilet and hot shower, hand basin and mirror, braai area, and kitchen area with sink.  A deep freeze facility is also available.

Kanamub Mountain Camp - An Exclusive, One-Group-Only Wilderness Experience (opening October 2008)

27kms north of Sesfontein on the Puros road, still within Sesfontein Conservancy, Kanamub Mountain Camp lies in a spectacular setting, completely secluded from but close to the main tourist route.  The camp is set into a stunning natural rock formation and offers amazing views across the plains to the west.  Guests can enjoy a beautiful African sunset from this ideal vantage point, and have a high chance of viewing a range of wildlife, including oryx, ostrich, springbok and zebra.

The site’s facilities include an open-air (but private!) shower, with hot water, a wash basin area and a stunning view; a full kitchen area with sink, sideboards and draining area; a flush toilet, and a braai area.  This campsite is offered as an exclusive site, by advance booking only, and can accommodate groups of up to 12 people.

Marble Campsite, Onyuva – an impressive facelift

Orupembe Conservancy’s Marble Campsite has also recently undergone an impressive facelift, and now has privately-screened sites with food preparation areas, sinks, and braai areas; a stone-built reception area, and a large ablution block with separate male and female showers and flush toilets.  Solar hot water provided.  Deep freeze facilities available.  Himba tours available with local Himba guides.

Van Zyl’s Pass Campsite, Otjihende – take a break before the Pass

Van Zyl’s Pass Campsite provides the perfect stop-off point to relax before tackling the infamous Van Zyl’s Pass en route to the Marienfluss.  Owned and managed by Otjitanda Conservancy, this campsite is situated 20kms before the Pass, near the village of Otjihende, just off the main through-route from nearby Otjitanda.  An absolutely stunning spot, the sites are built alongside a sandy river bed, offering privacy and seclusion in a beautiful natural setting.  Three large sites are available with private ablution blocks (flush toilet, hot shower, wash basin and mirror), kitchen area with sink, and braai areas.

Okaruhombo Campsite, Marienfluss – popular camp upgraded

A well-established and popular campsite already, Marienfluss Conservancy’s Okaruhombo has recently been professionally upgraded and now has substantially improved facilities on offer.  Situated at the far northern end of the beautiful Marienfluss valley, alongside the Kunene River and the Angolan border, this camp now offers 3 exclusive sites: one with solar hot water, shower, kitchen sink, basin, and mirror, the other two with private showers, toilets and kitchen areas.  In addition, there are 5 further sites, three of which share an ablution block with four showers, three basins and three toilets.  Deep freeze facilities are available.
